App or Dashboard Stuck Loading? Check Your VPN

A VPN running on your phone or computer can block the LightCam app and dashboard from loading. Here's how to check and fix it.

App or Dashboard Stuck Loading? Check Your VPN

LightCam app stuck on the loading screen

If the LightCam app opens but never finishes loading — your cameras and events show empty grey boxes that just sit there — a VPN running on your phone is one of the most common causes. The same thing can happen with the LightCam dashboard in your web browser.

A VPN is an extra layer of privacy that reroutes your internet through another network. Most of the time it's harmless, but it can sometimes block the LightCam app from talking to our servers. Turning it off for a moment usually fixes things.

Signs this is your issue

  • The app opens, shows your name, but cameras never load — just blank or shimmering boxes
  • Events at the top of the home screen show "Updated" but the list is empty
  • Pull-to-refresh doesn't help
  • The dashboard at dashboard.lightcam.com spins forever or shows a generic error
  • You recently installed a privacy app, ad blocker, or "internet security" app
  • Your work or school requires a VPN that's always on

How to check on iPhone

Look for the VPN badge. When a VPN is active, you'll see VPN in the status bar at the top of your screen, next to the WiFi symbol.

You can also check directly:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look near the top — if you see VPN with a green "Connected" toggle, a VPN is running.
  3. Tap the toggle to turn it off.
  4. Open the LightCam app and pull down to refresh.

Also check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management for any profile-based VPNs you may have forgotten about.

How to check on Android

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification shade.
  2. Look for a key icon or a VPN notification at the top.
  3. Tap and hold the VPN icon, or open Settings → Network & Internet → VPN.
  4. Turn off whichever VPN is active.
  5. Open the LightCam app and pull down to refresh.

How to check on a computer (for the dashboard)

If dashboard.lightcam.com won't load on your laptop or desktop:

  • Mac: Click the Apple menu → System Settings → VPN. If anything shows "Connected," disconnect it.
  • Windows: Open Settings → Network & Internet → VPN. Disconnect any active connection.
  • Browser extensions: Check your browser's extensions page for anything labeled VPN, proxy, "privacy," or "secure browsing." Try disabling those one at a time.

After disconnecting, refresh the dashboard page.

What if I need my VPN on?

Some folks have a VPN turned on all the time — for work, school, or personal preference. That's fine. A few things to try:

  • Switch your VPN's exit location. Some VPNs let you choose which country or city to route through. Try switching to a US-based location near you.
  • Use the split tunneling feature if your VPN offers it. Add lightcam.com and dashboard.lightcam.com to the list of sites that bypass the VPN.
  • Pause the VPN briefly when you need to check your cameras, then turn it back on.

We're working on making LightCam friendlier with more VPN providers. If yours consistently blocks the app, we'd love to know which one — drop us a note in Account → Messages.

Why this happens

LightCam's servers see lots of internet traffic from all over the world. To keep bad actors out, we filter out traffic that looks like it's coming from anonymous networks or known abuse sources. VPNs sometimes share an internet address with thousands of other users, and if any of those other users have caused trouble, our filter can block the whole address — and you with it.

It's not personal, and it's not your VPN's fault. Turning the VPN off briefly is the fastest way to get back in.

Still not loading after turning off the VPN?

If the app or dashboard still won't load with the VPN off:

  • Check your home internet — open any other website to confirm it's working.
  • Force-close the LightCam app and open it again. (On iPhone: swipe up and flick the LightCam card off the screen. On Android: open recents and swipe LightCam away.)
  • Restart your phone.
  • See Pairing Succeeded but Camera Still Not Usable if cameras show but won't play video.

Still need help? Go to Account → Messages in the app.
